Terms used in our catalog:

Production cel - An original painting on clear plastic (acetate or nitrate) which is placed over a background
and photographed in the animation process. The outline of the character  is applied to the front of the cel.
The paint colors are hand-painted onto the reverse side of the cel to eliminate brush strokes.

"Courvoisier"
Courvoisier set up or Courvoisier background refer to the Disney art program that released animation art through
the Courvoisier Gallery of San Francisco from 1938 until 1945. Cels from this program were released with
hand painted custom backgrounds that were created at Disney to accent the characters. Multi character cels
often are from different parts of the film. A few key matching backgrounds , conceptual sketches and
storyboards were also released through this art program

Courvoisier backgrounds and set ups are among the most sought after Disney original art and are prized for
their hand work. In the past few years the name "Courvoisier" has been acquired by a company and new
certificates have been issued that have nothing to do with the original Disney program. We only use the term
to refer to the Disney art program from 1938-1945.

"Custom hand painted background"
A custom hand painted background is a non production background that was created to go with a cel after its
release from the studio.

"Original pencil animation drawing"
A one of a kind pencil drawing created by an animator from which the cels are later created.

"Original storyboard"
A series of small sketches, each depicting a scene, which are created to set the storyline of the film. Sometimes
small ones are referred to as thumbnail storyboards.

"Ozalid print model sheet"
Refers to the reproduction process that Disney used in creating their model sheets from the late 1930's to the
late 1960's. The animators would mount a group of trimmed original pencil drawings and then have them
photographically copied using an ozalid printing process. These sheets were created in small numbers and were
used as guides throughout the studio during the making of the films. By the late 1960's the Xerox machine
ended this expensive process so model sheets from this later time were reproduced in large numbers.

"Print Background"
is a printed background put behind a cel to enhance the image and give the character placement. These are
not necessarily from the same film as the cels.

"Production Background"
is an original hand painted background from the same film, but not necessarily from the exact same moment
as the cel.

"Key Master Background"
is an original hand painted background that was actually filmed in the making of the movie and exactly
matches the cel. This is the rarest type of Disney cel set up.
